In 1947, Erling Persson opens a new womenswear store in Västerås, Sweden. He calls it Hennes, Swedish for “Hers”.
1968, Hennes acquires hunting and fishing equipment retailer Mauritz Widforss, and the name is changed to Hennes & Mauritz. This is the start of offering of men's and also children's clothing.
Today H&M is still a Persson family run business comprising of over 4750 stores in 69 markets.
The H&M Group now includes 6 additional brands: H&M Home, COS, Weekday, Cheap Monday, Monki, & Other Stories, Arket.
The H&M business idea is to offer fashion and quality at the best price in a sustainable way. This was tweaked in 2013 to add “in a sustainable way” as sustainability is firmly at the heart of everything we do.
